We’ve all heard Smokey’s message about forest fires, but did you know that another risk to the forest may be lurking in your campfire – even before you light it? Insect pests like the Asian Longhorn Beetle and diseases like Laurel Wilt are a major threat to our wooded environments.
One of the most common ways they are transported from place to place is on firewood brought by campers. The solution? Easy, Don’t Move Firewood. When you pack for your trip leave the firewood at home and pick some up at your destination. If there’s any left at the end of your stay donate it to another camper. Even wood without any obvious signs can harbor pests – the only safe option is to buy wood locally. For more information and a gallery of forest pests visit the Don’t Move Firewood Campaign Website.
